Symposium

Autotrophic Microorganisms: from Cyanobacteria to Bryophytes

Organizer : Michael Lakatos (lakatos -at- rhrk.uni-kl.de)

The symposium will focus from tropical autotrophic organisms such as cyanobacteria, algae, and lichens, to bryophytes. It will place emphasis on the importance of patterns, processes and functions of these organisms in tropical terrestrial systems. Due to their poikilohydric nature these organisms are highly interacting with their adjacent abiotic conditions and play an important role in nutrient (e.g. N-fixation-uptake-release, herbivory, decomposition) and water cycling (e.g. vapour and rainfall interceptors). As primary producer they provide food resources and biomass input. Because of their close association with climatically sensitive habitats and ecosystems, they may serve as indicators of large-scale changes in tropical systems.
