Illegal, polluting & dangerous : the gold rush in the Guianas
The ATBC conservation committee already warned about rampant illegal goldmining activities in the Guianas. On 17 December, the guardian released an article signed by Alex Bellos about the environmental and social situations along the Oyapock river, at French Guianan-Brazilian border. A documentary was also presented at Channel 4 on the same day. A comparable situation occurs on the Suriname frontier along the Maroni river, as well as everywhere along rivers in the interior of French Guiana.
