Amazon Conservation Team in Suriname

The Amazon Conservation Team (ACT) was awarded mongabay.com's inaugural "Innovation in Conservation Award" for its path-breaking efforts to enable indigenous Amazonians to maintain ties to their history and cultural traditions while protecting their rainforest home from illegal loggers and miners. ACT’s efforts in the Northeast Amazon are concentrated in Suriname and the Brazil/Suriname border region. As one of the planet’s least disturbed and, to date, least threatened ecosystems, the rainforests of Suriname have long been considered a “Major Wilderness Area.” That is why ATBC Annual meeting wil be held at Paramaribo in 2008.
