Tropical rainforest deforestation and climate change

"More than half the Amazon rainforest will be damaged or destroyed within 20 years" wrote Rhett Butler from Mongabay.com (Page of the Month) reporting about a recent article by Nepstad et al in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B. At the same time, another report by MeteoFrance mentioned that average temperature in France was 1.1°C higher than normal, 2007-2008 winter being the sunniest since 1950. Though colder (-0.7°C) than normal in December, temperatures were greater than normal in both January (2.3°C) and February (1.8°C). Flowers are now blooming in Europe. What will be the consequences for biodiversity of such an early flowering ? The future will tell.
